{"id":428,"date":"2014-04-30T20:24:02","date_gmt":"2014-04-30T20:24:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/piteo.com\/?p=428"},"modified":"2017-05-16T21:33:38","modified_gmt":"2017-05-16T21:33:38","slug":"428","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/piteo.com\/?p=428","title":{"rendered":"The Importance of Gin and Tonic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; admin_label=&#8221;Section&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;0px|0px|51.2px|0px&#8221;][et_pb_row admin_label=&#8221;Row&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_3&#8243;][et_pb_image admin_label=&#8221;Image&#8221; src=&#8221;https:\/\/piteo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/gin-and-tonic.jpg&#8221; \/][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d like to examine the importance of the Gin and Tonic.\u00a0 I&#8217;m kidding, right?\u00a0 No, the Gin and Tonic is important for many reasons.\u00a0 And some of those reasons have\u00a0historic implications.\u00a0 But before I get ahead of myself, and for those of my friends who like me to get to the point, here&#8217;s the perfect recipe:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4\u00a0ice cubes, spheres are better\u00a0(spring water at less than\u00a0-10\u00baF)<\/li>\n<li>3 ounces gin\u00a0of Plymouth Gin (or <em><span style=\"color: #252525; font-family: Arial;\">Oude Jenever<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #252525; font-family: Arial;\"> if you can find it<\/span>)<\/li>\n<li>3\u00a0ounces of Q tonic water<\/li>\n<li>a splash of soda water<\/li>\n<li>1 lime wedge (about 1\/8 thick) squeezed slightly into<\/li>\n<li>a chilled 12 oz. Waterford (or other flint glass)\u00a0tumbler<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So the idea behind the recipe is the assumption that one wants to create a gin and tonic as close to the gin and tonic enjoyed throughout the British Empire, certainly during, but even long before the height of the reign of Queen Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>After mixing the G&amp;T above, you must find a wide veranda and a large peacock wicker chair.\u00a0 Ideally, the drink would be delivered to you on a silver salver to insure that the glass has not been warmed during the delivery.\u00a0 It is from this vantage point that stiff upper lip British aristocrats surveyed the transformation of the world into English countryside.<\/p>\n<p>During the middle ages, the search for any\u00a0process or any substance that could stave off sudden ignominious death was furious.\u00a0 Literally, no stone was not turned over in the hunt for some form of protection\u00a0from mysterious sudden death.\u00a0 Among the\u00a0powders and potions\u00a0where any number of things that were boiled, fermented, and distilled.\u00a0 Berries,\u00a0seeds, grain all went into the pot.\u00a0 If these liquids could alter a person&#8217;s state of mind, perhaps they could alter a person&#8217;s state of health.\u00a0 The problem was that many of these liquids caused blindness, unconsciousness, and death.\u00a0 Eventually, the juniper berry was one of those things that got thrown in the pot.\u00a0 Stewed juniper berries actually produced a juice that was palatable enough to drink yet did not kill the drinker.\u00a0 However, the\u00a0fluid result of\u00a0boiling juniper berries\u00a0did kill bacteria\u00a0when added to water.<\/p>\n<p>So in the 15th century, gin (from the Dutch for juniper, <em>jenever<\/em>) became a really good idea.\u00a0 While people still died from the plague or malaria, adding a little gin to water kept them from spending all day in the outhouse, or dying of dysentery.\u00a0 It was still a few centuries from\u00a0the gin and tonic, but\u00a0gin was now fully embraced as &#8220;beneficial&#8221;.\u00a0 In contrast to wine, gin was seen more as medicinal, taken to ward off illness rather than something to savor and compliment\u00a0dining.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;tonic&#8221; came next in the evolution of the G&amp;T, but it arrived in two parts.\u00a0 Modern tonic water is basically carbonated water and flavoring that is similar to quinine.\u00a0 The carbonated water would wait to the 19th century, quinine was waiting for a delivery system as early as 1638.\u00a0 No one knows how long the residents of ancient Peru and surroundings have been getting mellow by squeezing the bark of the cinchona tree, in all likelihood, it was centuries before nosey Jesuit priests became curious.\u00a0 The ante-Peruvians made the first &#8220;tonic water&#8221; by mixing ground cinchona bark with sugared water.<\/p>\n<p>The wife of the Spanish Viceroy in Peru, the Countess of Chinchon, had fallen violently ill with malaria.\u00a0 Her husband begged the local Incas for an antidote.\u00a0\u00a0The Incas instructed her to drink\u00a0the potion\u00a0containing the ground bark.\u00a0 The potion worked and she\u00a0recovered. In her honor, the Spanish renamed the Peruvian tree the \u201cCinchona\u201d tree.\u00a0 Gin and cinchona bark hadn&#8217;t met yet,\u00a0however, these two components were destined for the same glass.<\/p>\n<p>In the 17th and 18th centuries, quinine flourished as a medication for malaria. he ground bark was then imported to Europe and quickly prized. But Peru prohibited exporting Cinchona seeds. So, as colonialism and hard-drinking officers created more need, the supply of Peruvian Cinchona bark could not keep up with demand.\u00a0\u00a0Prices skyrocketed &#8211; at one point,\u00a0the bark powder was worth its weight in gold.<\/p>\n<p>By the middle of the 18th century, the British empire was everywhere.\u00a0 British hegemony was in residence in more places on earth than any country at any time previous or since.\u00a0 The British Navy made the Empire possible, it advanced it, it protected it, and it moved assets from anywhere to anywhere else with impunity.\u00a0 The British Navy did not have the best ships or the biggest ships, and periodically, it did not have the most ships.\u00a0 Britain had the best trained crews.\u00a0 No other nation could match the British Navy for experienced men.\u00a0 Time at sea may have averaged &#8212; averaged &#8212; 15 years, with many seamen claiming more than 50 years of service.<\/p>\n<p>So how do you get that many men, and how do you keep them on the ship.\u00a0 The answer is relatively simple &#8212; you get them drunk, kidnap them, then keep them drunk with a daily ration of grog.\u00a0 Though grog was chiefly rum-based, gin was an excellent substitute and had a growing reputation for its medicinal value.\u00a0 Gin, rather than rum, was certainly fueling the British Army since the Battle of Antwerp in 1585.<\/p>\n<p>By the 18th century, the British Army and the British East India company were experimenting with the combination of gin and quinine.\u00a0 Both drugs helped fortify the troops separately, what more natural result than the combination of the two.\u00a0 To help reduce the intense bitterness of the quinine, the soldiers of the British East India company added sugar to the mix.\u00a0 The G&amp;T was born.\u00a0 Well, almost, in 1850, in was still a flat drink.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Priestly in 1767 he invented a way to carbonate water by suspending it above fermenting beer.\u00a0 Priestly figured out that this carbon dioxide would\u00a0infuse into the water and turn it into something similar to the naturally carbonated &#8220;spa&#8221; waters that doctors of the day thought had curative properties.\u00a0 Could it be true, yes, carbonated water was medicine too, oh my, this is too good to be true,\u00a0first Quinine, then Gin, now carbonation.\u00a0 Doctors of the day soon proscribed the carbonated water neat for a variety of aliments such as &#8220;Stone of the Bladder&#8221;.\u00a0 However it didn&#8217;t hurt that the salt in the Schweppes&#8217; mineral waters also masked the impurities in whatever it was mixed with.\u00a0 So patients soon added the carbonated water to their own self-medications. The &#8220;dash and a splash&#8221; was born. It quickly had many siblings.<\/p>\n<p>By about 1810, the modern Gin and Tonic was born and the world became a better place.\u00a0 It was probably the over indulgence of the tonic, that lost the British their empire.\u00a0 While uncountable British colonels sipped G&amp;Ts on the veranda, the natives were getting restless.\u00a0 In the end, it might be said that the good ol&#8217; Gin and Tonic was responsible for both the rise and the fall of the British Empire.<\/p>\n<p>Since I stole some of the data above from the Q Tonic people, I&#8217;ll close with an ad for their tonic water.\u00a0 <em>&#8220;Q\u00a0has returned the essence of tonic water\u2014Peruvian quinine.
